Barlowe's Herbal Elixirs now offers a powerful water/alcohol tincture of Catuaba (Trichillia catigua) 0.6% alkaloid extract and Muira Puama (Ptychopetalum uncinatum) 12:1 extract called Catuaba & Muira Puama Elixir. In Brazil, these two herbs are traditionally taken together in alcohol by both men and women for their aphrodisiac effect. This Elixir is packed in glass. Barlowe's Herbal Elixirs is one of the very few manufacturers that still pack their products in glass whenever possible, even though glass is more expensive. Barlowe believes that chemicals can leach out of plastic containers and contaminate the contents, and that the use of glass is much better for the environment.
In Brazil there is a popular saying, "Until a father reaches 60, the son is his; after that, the son is Catuaba's!" In Brazilian herbal medicine, Catuaba is considered a central nervous system stimulant with aphrodisiac properties. It is generally prescribed for sexual weakness in both men and women, agitation, depression, nervousness, nerve pain, and poor memory. In 1992, a Japanese study showed that Catuaba had potential anti-bacterial and anti-HIV activity, indicating that it could prevent certain infections in people with HIV and others with immunity deficiencies. It also helps dilate and strengthen the arteries - improving circulation, and prevents inflammation, which may be helpful for people with cardiac problems.
The modern British Herbal Pharmacopoeia recommends Muira Puama for impotency, and it has been in the Brazilian Pharmocopoeia since the 1950's. Although Muira Puama has been and is still utilized as a strengthening tonic for males, as a remedy for hair loss and balding, and as a central nervous system tonic; it is most oftentimes used as a treatment for erectile dysfunction and impotency, and to increase sexual desire in both men and women, generally in combination with the herb Catuaba. A paper presented at The First International Congress on Ethnopharmacology held in Strasbourg, France, in 1990, described a trial done at the Institute of Sexology in Paris on 262 men with erectile problems, including a lack of sexual desire. Researchers found that over half of the subjects given a daily dose of 1 to 1.5 grams of Muira Puama extract over a two week period experienced positive benefits in their sex lives. This herb has been gaining in popularity in the United States, where herbalists and health care practitioners are using it for impotence, depression, menstrual cramps and PMS, nerve pain, and for central nervous system disorders.
